Working with people who are injured and seeking strength and endurance rehabilitation is common in my line of work. I have been lucky enough to have helped clients recover from a large range of injuries and general pain. Throughout this process, I have emphasised three main areas within my practice to maximise individuals' training mentality.
Emphasis on values over goals. Within any rehabilitation program, there is a chance that progression may be halted or delayed. If this happens, and if individuals are solely focused on achieving a time-specific goal, motivation can be diminished. Emphasising values of hard work, persistence, and determination throughout the injury journey would mean that motivation and confidence levels would remain consistent.
Establishing non-physical improvement. Comparing your physical movements to where you are now when it comes to an injury can affect confidence levels. You can use this time where physical movement will be limited to focus on aspects of your nutrition, form, and your recovery. Health is not just about moving, it comprises a range of factors we can all improve from.
Tracking each stage of rehab progression. This is crucial to every person when it comes to their recovery journey. Throughout rehab, a range of questions about your movement, mentality, and your progression as a whole would be at the forefront of your mind. Having tangible milestones of improvements will not only put these questions to bed but will reinforce the confidence in how far you have come when you are ready to return to activity.
