The secrets of changing your unhealthy behaviour...for the long-term

Updated: May 13, 2023

Whether it's not eating that daily chocolate bar, getting more protein in your diet, or trying to increase the number of sessions in the gym, effectively changing your behaviour will be tough. Here are some top tips to help you change unhealthy behaviours.

Don’t focus on what you ‘should’ be doing

Focussing on what you should be doing is going to do nothing but destroy your confidence. Start by focussing on activities that provoke small changes to your behaviours and slowly build up from there. For example, instead of cutting out all processed foods, start with halving the sugar in your coffee every morning.

Ensure the behaviours are in line with your overall goal

Make sure that every activity you are performing is going to help you achieve your behaviour change. Don’t fill your day with forced activities which are perceived to be healthy for you. For example, is that weekly yoga class you hate making you motivated to be healthy in your everyday life? Most likely it is just making you hate yoga.

Plan, plan, plan

What friends are going to be supportive of this behaviour change? What safety measures can you think of when things get tough? What, when, and where are you going to have that healthy lunch today? Having the answers to every question will take the excuses out of your vocabulary to help you focus on changing your unhealthy behaviours for the long term.

Behaviour change is tough. Focus on the moment, acknowledge but don’t allow any negative thoughts to get in the way, and always be hopeful. I'd love to hear what healthy changes you have been making to your lives, I am in need of some inspo!
